Hotel Tonnelle Brings on the Charm in New Orleans

Hotel Tonnelle has opened in New Orleans’ Garden District.

A member of Marriott’s Tribute Hotel portfolio, Hotel Tonnelle owner RLJ Lodging Trust partnered with architecture and design firm //3877 to craft a bold, expressive design firmly rooted in the locale of the surrounding historic area.

Hotel Tonnelle new orleans garden district marriott internationalDerived from the French term for arbor (an alcove formed by plants in a garden setting), Tonnelle wholly embodies its namesake. A brutalist exterior is nestled under a canopy of low-hanging oak trees and lush greenery signature to the Garden District.

Guests are welcomed by a warm, layered interior design that contrasts the building’s façade. The color palette comprises rich green shades and pops of saturated jewel tones that meld with wood finishes and whimsical upholstery pairings.

The lobby is a multipurpose space akin to a living room that encourages guests to gather. Here, playful wallpaper and ornamental trim complement a sprawling gallery wall featuring an array of vintage and custom art, including pieces from local galleries.

The south lobby features a library nook, complete with a cozy, locally sourced fireplace mantle, a vintage-inspired Tibetan tiger rug, and a communal table that creates an intimate feel.

Meanwhile, the north lobby is home to restaurant Seventeen Feet, a name derived from the tradition of trimming live oak trees to precisely 17 feet during Mardi Gras. The space is anchored by an expansive mural by New Orleans native Craig Cundiff and a bar designed to feel more like a local hotspot than a hotel experience. Outside, plush, colorful furniture and ambient lighting creates an atmosphere that is at once energetic and intimate.

Directly inspired by the low hanging oak trees and Spanish moss lining the Garden District, guestrooms are characterized by a deep green color that serves as a canvas for an vintage-inspired art collection and playful furniture forms.
