Iowa’s largest retailer celebrates 50 years in business

URBANDALE, Iowa — Homemakers Furniture here, part of NFM in Top 100 Berkshire Hathaway’s furniture division, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Founded by Carl and Ina Merschman in 1974, it has grown into Iowa’s largest furniture retailer with a two-story showroom spanning 215,000 square feet and more than 11,000 items for customers to explore. Today, it’s led by second- and third-generation members of the Merschman family.

“Homemakers’ success over the past five decades can be attributed to our adaptability. The retail landscape has undergone significant transformations, particularly with the rise of e-commerce,” said Jason Merschman, assistant vice president. “We’ve embraced these changes, recognizing the evolving needs and preferences of our customers. Our showroom also underwent a complete renovation that concluded in 2023, offering our customers the ultimate in-person shopping experience. By remaining agile and responsive to industry shifts, we’ve positioned ourselves for continued growth in an ever-changing market.”

Added President Roger Merschman, “We’re immensely grateful for the trust and confidence our employees and community have shown us over the past 50 years. We’re committed to continuously improving the customer experience and always striving to be better. Our dedicated staff, some of whom have been with us for decades, embody our commitment to growth and excellence. We’re grateful for their dedication.”

To commemorate this milestone anniversary, Homemakers is inviting customers, old and new, to help celebrate with a series of giveaways, prizes, and events. One winner will even walk away with a $5,000 Homemakers shopping spree.
