Mayor on hand for a Star Furniture donation at Houston Furniture Bank: Here’s why

HOUSTON — Star Furniture and Houston Mayor John Whitmire were on hand on May 13 to help shed light on Houston Furniture Bank’s #NoKidsOnTheFloor campaign.

As part of the visit, Star Furniture aimed to underscore the profound impact of the Furniture Bank’s initiatives on the lives of Houstonians, the Houston-based retailer, part of Top 100 Berkshire Hathaway’s furniture division, made a significant contribution to HFB.

In all, Star Furniture brought a 26-foot delivery truck filled with mattresses, upholstered furniture and some case pieces. Michael Galloway, Star’s vice president of marketing, told Furniture Today the items were a combination of floor samples, returns and other merchandise collected since its last donation, which was approximately one week ago.

“The Furniture Bank will never be the same after our visit today,” said Whitmire.

Since its inception in 1992, the Houston Furniture Bank has been on a mission to transform empty houses into homes by providing furniture to less fortunate families at little to no cost. Recently, their efforts have been galvanized by the #NoKidsOnTheFloor campaign, an initiative spearheaded by Director Oli Muhammad and his team, aimed at ensuring every child has a mattress to sleep on. This campaign repurposes mattresses destined for landfills, crafting them into brand new ones for those in need.

Last year, more than 700,000 mattresses were consigned to landfills in the greater Houston area alone. Yet, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Furniture Bank and its partners, 2,300 children were gifted with new mattresses, promising them a better night’s sleep. Whitmire called it a triumph for both the community and the environment.

Star’s Galloway lauded the Furniture Bank’s work as “a wonderful example of sustainability in action.” Star Furniture’s partnership with the Furniture Bank epitomizes the industry’s potential to effect positive change, enhancing the quality of life for citizens while mitigating environmental degradation.

“We encourage our customers to donate to the furniture bank and are committed to helping them do so to support our community,” Galloway said, underscoring Star Furniture’s unwavering dedication to social responsibility.
