Research reveals which states have eager home remodelers

AUSTIN, Texas — If remodeling begets home furnishings purchases, then business should be looking up for retailers in Illinois, Colorado, Maryland, Florida and New Jersey.

Research conducted on behalf of self-storage company SpareFoot shows that homeowners in Illinois are the most committed to upgrading the appearance of their homes. Residents in this state had the highest online searches related to home makeovers — 470 per 100,000 residents — covering terms such as “bathroom remodel,” “kitchen remodel” and “home remodel.”

The search for “bathroom remodel” alone averaged more than 11,000 monthly searches among Illinois residents, far outpacing kitchen remodel look ups.

Colorado, which was second highest in remodeling interest, averaged 447 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Other states rounding out the Top 10 were Maryland, Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut, Virginia, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Washington.

At the other end of the list, those living Montana showed the least interest in home remodels, averaging just 174 monthly searches by 100,000 people. Other states where interest was low included Alaska, South Dakota, Idaho and Wyoming.

The research covered a long list of search terms that covered in-home remodeling for various rooms such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements and home offices, as well as overall home and house remodels.
