Wayfair adds zero waste target to corporate responsibility goals

BOSTON — Wayfair, which just issued its third corporate responsibility report, has made a commitment to achieve zero waste across its global operations by 2030.

The target aims to divert more than 90% of Wayfair’s operational waste from landfills and incineration. In 2023, Wayfair diverted about 42% of the waste produced globally from landfills.

The “Bringing Impact Home” corporate responsibility report, according to Kate Gulliver, chief financial and chief administrative officer, “highlights the important progress we’ve made toward our ongoing support of our communities, our people and our planet. While this report is a retrospective of our impact and progress over the past year, we know that this work is never truly done.

“Looking ahead,” she said, “we remain committed to investing our time and resources in these crucial areas, and I’m thrilled to be adding our zero-waste goal as a key commitment.”

Other highlights of the report include:

  • The establishment of the Wayfair Neighborhood Fund with a founding donation of $1 million, which directs grants to organizations supporting people experiencing homelessness and ensuring local neighborhoods thrive.
  • Doubling the number of and business from Black-owned suppliers on the Wayfair platform through its Celebrate Black Makers program in 2023.
  • Some 4,000 employees celebrated their shared cultures and experiences through employee resource groups or affinity groups.
  • The issuing of grants from the Wayfair Emergency Relief Fund to assist 150 employees during their time of need.
  • Doubling the number of third-party certified products in its Shop Sustainability program to more than 33,000 items.
  • Joining one of the largest virtual power purchase agreements, with about 66% of its electricity consumption covered by contracted energy offtake from its participation in the Liberty Solar VPPA.
