A Former Santorini Mine Finds New Life as an All-Suite Hotel

The Greek island of Santorini has welcomed Santo Mine, a 37-suite luxury hotel from locally based Santo Collection.

Located on the site of a former pumice stone mine, Santo Mine incorporates the natural landscape throughout its design, which was brought to life by Greek firm Straight Line Architecture.santo mine santorini volcanic rock hotel stairs

The design concept blends traditional Cycladic architecture with elements that nod to the region’s volcanic mining heritage.

The property begins with a façade of dark, jagged volcanic rocks that cascade down a cliff toward the Aegean Sea, with simplistic off-white Cycladic suites tucked within the natural contour lines of the rock.

The interiors of the suites are inspired by the natural stones, colors, and textures found in Santorini’s volcanic soil. Dark volcanic rock is illuminated on the walls, while copper-toned nightstands and stone sinks are also featured.

Other natural materials employed include ceramics, wood, wrought iron, and cotton—all set against a backdrop of light, warm earth tones.

Elements in the room also mimic classic Cycladic architecture with soft lines and curves. The tranquil aesthetic inside carries into the outdoor living space, where guests are greeted by plunge pools and jacuzzis that overlook the sea.
