Beyond Inc. gets into protection business

MIDVALE, Utah – A new service will allow Bed Bath & Beyond customers to opt in for shipping and product protection.

Parent company Beyond Inc. has partnered with Extend on a pair of programs:

  • Extend Shipping Protection protects customers from loss, damage and theft during delivery.
  • Extend Product Protection protects against accidental damage as well as extended protection after a manufacturer’s warranty expires.

Both are available now to add at checkout for online purchases through bedbathandbeyond.com and will soon after become available to customers shopping on Overstock.com and Zulily.com.

In addition to providing a new customer service, “Beyond was also motivated by the promise of margin-rich incremental revenue generated by Extend protection sales,” according to the announcement.

“Extend has helped merchants increase average order value and maximize customer lifetime value, both of which will give Beyond a leg-up as it looks to drive sales from both new and existing customers,” the announcement continued.

How does it work?

Under the shipping protection service, once a claim is approved customers will receive a gift card for the value of the product (plus shipping costs and taxes) so they can order a replacement. For damage claims, a full or partial refund via gift card will be provided. Alternatively, the product may be repaired, or a replacement may be provided.

Fees for this service vary. The fee on a flatware set (purchase price of $119.95) was $4.01. The fee on an Egyptian cotton sheet set (purchase price $182.99) was $5.58.

The product protection service applies to higher-ticket items such as furniture. Coverage includes accidental damages such as breaks, drops, rips and tears; stains from food, drink and bodily fluids; and in-home service.

Fee options on a $567 velvet sofa were $49.99 (two-year protection), $79.99 (three-year) and $99.99 (five-year).

“We’re reimagining the customer experience with convenience in mind, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Extend,” said Marcus Lemonis, executive chairman, Beyond. “Extend is the perfect partner to help customers protect the products they buy from us from the moment of purchase through the life of the product.”
